Project Development, Feasibility Services & Regulatory Compliance/Approvals

Ensuring Comprehensive Statutory and Regulatory Compliance for Surana Group’s developmental and infrastructure projects (incl. Bhagyanagar Telecom & Scientia Infocom Ltd)

Preparation of Comprehensive and Integrated Document on EIA for Thermal Power Plant, Tamil Nadu

We prepared the Comprehensive and Integrated Document on EIA Report & EMP Study for Captive Jetty of 3x350 MW coal-based Thermal Power Plant in Tamil Nadu. The work reconciled NEERI’s EIA (marine and terrestrial components) and Indomer Coastal Hydraulics Pvt. Ltd’s three-season and shoreline modeling studies. This ensured complete regulatory compliance as per the MoEF’s directives issued to the proponent under the EIA (2006) and CRZ (1991) notifications.

Site Suitability Analysis and Land Cover Study, Andhra Pradesh

We performed site suitability analysis and land use-land cover study to ensure full compliance with EC framework for the latest, large-scale poultry/animal feed facility in Andhra Pradesh. Client is one of the largest poultry/animal feed sellers based in AP.

Pollution Prevention through Process Control, Andhra Pradesh

  • Designed Pollution Prevention through Process Control (P2) as a part of the Rapid Environmental Impact Assessment (REIA) for Client’s food additives manufacturing facility in Medak District, AP.
  • Investigated waste streams from chemical unit, carried out laboratory-cum- field studies.
  • Developed pollution prevention-cum-waste disposal scheme for the industrial process. This work was performed under IIT-Kharagpur and Environmental Protection, Training and Research Institute (EPTRI). It was carried out under the supervision of the fmr. Member Secretary of APPCB (also, Member of Expert Committee for Environmental Appraisal of Thermal and Coal Mining Projects, MoEF, Govt. of India).

Decision support tools for industries to manage wastes, US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), Washington DC, USA

Helped US federal government engineer risk-based decision support tools of Industrial Waste Evaluation Model (IWEM) for use by industrial waste management units. This project involved generation of Tier 1 national evaluation tables of Leachate Concentration Threshold Values (LCTVs) for various non-hazardous chemical constituents. This project was based on the popular platform of EPA’s Composite Model with Transformation Products (EPACMTP). Project also provided extensive technical support for the EPA’s Guide for Industrial Waste Management, IWEM Technical Background Document, and CMTP Parameters/Data Background Document. The work was delivered through HydroGeoLogic Inc. (HGL) of Herndon, VA (USA).

Integrated Surface Water – Groundwater Quality/Quantity Analysis, St. John’s River Water Management District (SJRWMD), Florida, USA

  • Assimilated environmental parameters and key water quality/quantity modeling data for integrated surface water-groundwater models for Orange and Seminole Counties (SJRWMD, Florida) from diverse environmental sources.
  • Determined suitable water modeling conceptualizations, prepared ‘Task 2 Project Report‘ for SJRWMD towards ensuring full regulatory compliance. This project was delivered through HydroGeoLogic Inc. (HGL) of Herndon, VA (USA).

Infrastructure and Service Delivery

Water and Sanitation in Schools of Hyderabad, Center for Energy, Environment, Urban Governance and Infrastructure Development, Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI), Hyderabad (in progress)

Analyzed the status of water and sanitation in schools of Hyderabad city based on the comprehensive field survey by ASCI and AP State government. Evaluating the best practices, outlining of policy options and presenting the framework of alternatives using standardized tools will be done for improving school sanitation levels. This work is being carried out for the Centre for Energy, Environment, Urban Governance, and Infrastructure Development (CEEUGID) at ASCI.

Public Private Partnership (Franchisee Model) in Rural Electricity Distribution, Electricity DISCOMs (Project Principals) and Lok Satta NGO (Project Facilitator)

Provided dedicated engineering and advocacy services to the Project Facilitator in project implementation and monitoring for the first-ever public-private partnership in rural electricity distribution in AP State. This landmark pilot project followed AP Government’s constitution of Task Force on Agriculture and adoption of franchisee model in the power distribution sector. This initiative resulted in better quality power to rural consumers, 100% metering and energy audit in project areas, infrastructure improvements and significant energy savings. This work was carried out through Consumer Organization for Electricity Reforms (CORE) and Lok Satta organization (Project Facilitator).

Public Policy, Governance Issues & Advocacy

Environmental evaluation of Indirasagar Multipurpose Major Irrigation Project (Polavaram Dam) across River Godavari, Vivekananda Seva Samiti (VIKASA), Andhra Pradesh

Performed a detailed environmental and regulatory compliance analysis of the upcoming Polavaram Dam in AP. This project was commissioned by VIKASA to generate Alternative Project Proposals to the Governments of AP and India to minimize land submergence and people displacement, improve Relief and Rehabilitation (R&R) terms, significantly lower project costs and enhance compliance with EIA Notification (2006).

Arsenic contamination of groundwater in Bengal basin: spatial characterization of source, mobilization and transport for formulating health and drinking water policy

Performed a detailed geostatistical evaluation of process controls and characterization of spatial variability of dissolved Arsenic in shallow and deep bore wells in Bengal basin. Feasible models for estimation of groundwater arsenic variability in the region were proposed resulting in the formulation of appropriate health and drinking water policies. Subsequent to these recommendations, the Bangladeshi national government has taken concrete measures. This work was a collaborative project among University of Cincinnati (UC), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Division of Engineering and Applied Sciences (DEAS) at Harvard University and Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) funded by a US National Science Foundation Award.
